News: Meet Great Dane Airways

A new carrier is being set up in Denmark named Great Dane Airlines. It will be based at Aalborg in North Jutland, Denmark and fly two leased 118-seater Embraer 195 aircraft. The firm is targeting both business and leisure travellers and says that it has identified a niche that will involve flying scheduled services to Nice, France; Edinburgh, Scotland and Dublin in Republic of Ireland on a weekly or thrice-weekly basis. Its first flights are expected to take off in June.

Charter flights are also in the pipeline, with routes from Aalborg, Bullund and Copenhagen to holiday hot spots including Palma, Spain; Rhodes and Chania in Greece; and Varna in Bulgaria.

Great Dane Airlines will also be flying for Bravo Tours, part of the Primera Travel Group that owned Primera Airlines until its collapse in October last year. Tickets go on sale on March 5 and the lowest fares will be basic, with checked bags and seat assignments available for additional fees.

Aalborg is not currently well connected to the rest of the global network as around 75% of its scheduled daily departures are to Copenhagen. At the carrier's launch CEO Thomas Hugo Møller said: "At Great Dane Airlines, we will focus on the need for charter companies and be quick and adaptable in relation to wishes and needs. We have identified under-capacity in the northern European market for charter flights and regional scheduled flights with 100 to 120-seat jets. This gave us the idea to start an airline with strong North Jutland roots."
