News: Major revamp for JFK Terminal 8

American Airlines and British Airways are to invest $344m in a major development of Terminal 8 at New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK). The plans involve expansion and improvements the customer experience in T8, which will enable British Airways to transfer from its existing site in Terminal 7 to join its transatlantic joint venture partner American Airlines.

Around 70,400sq ft will be added to T8, with 33,000sq ft being accessible to the public.

The existing areas will be upgraded with improved baggage systems, additional premium check-in space, and an improved food and drink offer. British Airways is investing £52m which will include new lounges for First and Club World customers, and an upgraded areas for travellers in the main building.

The project is part of a $13bn project to upgrade JFK that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled in October. Cuomo said: "Today, that transformation is well underway, with an extraordinary private investment that will turn JFK into a truly modern airport. This new investment is part and parcel with the State’s broader efforts to modernize airports all across New York."

British Airways’ Chairman and CEO Alex Cruz added: “We’re excited to announce our move to Terminal 8, alongside American Airlines, our Atlantic joint-business partner. Offering the best customer experience at JFK now and in the future is a top priority. We look forward to working with the Port Authority and American Airlines to continue building a world-class transatlantic travel experience in our new home from 2022.”

Other projects either underway or in planning include replacing Terminal 2 and Terminal 7, jetBlue Airways occupying the space currently taken by T7.

Additional developments being progressed include rebuilding Terminal 1 to increase its floor space three fold, and improvements to the land side road network. Air France, Japan Airlines, Korean Air and Lufthansa will develop a $7bn terminal on the south side of the central area, while on the north side jetBlue's expanded facilities will make way for 12 more international gates. Cuomo’s plan also includes the Central Park at JFK green space, a food hall, The High Line elevated walkway and exhibits portraying New York monuments.
