Aviation: 2018 - Boeing delivers more

An incredible 1,606 jet airliners were delivered to the world's airlines by the two major jet manufacturers - Airbus and Boeing - in 2018. Boeing just squeaked into top spot by handing over 806 aircraft during the year, while Airbus followed closely behind with 800 airframes completed.

The US manufacturer closed the year by handing over 89 commercial aircraft to airlines and lessors during Decemeber which comprised 12 737-800s, 51 737-MAXs, four 737-900s, one 767 freighter, 17 787s and four 777Fs. The 2018 total beats the firm's previous annual record of 763 deliveries. Production was only part of the story though, and Boeing also booked 893 net orders during 2018, 203 of those coming in December. The deals included 673 737s, 109 787s and 51 777s, valued at $143.7bn at list prices.

Boeing president and CEO Kevin McAllister said: "In a dynamic year, our production discipline and our supplier partners helped us build and deliver more airplanes than ever before to satisfy the strong demand for air travel across the globe."

Airbus is due to release a detailed breakdown of its 2018 orders and deliveries later this week.
